Perast

Local news, practical travel information, and a curated photo gallery from the Bay of Kotor.

Highlights
Fašinada (Perast) — 22 July 2026: Perast’s most iconic tradition returns on 22 July, when boats form a procession to Our Lady of the Rocks and stones are added to reinforce the island. The event is strongly linked to local identity and maritime heritage. Arrive early for waterfront viewing, and expect limited parking and crowded promenades in the evening. +++ Forteca International Film Festival (Perast) — late July 2026 (dates TBC): Perast’s open-air film programme is expected to return in the last week of July, combining screenings and cultural events in a unique seaside setting. Exact dates and venues are typically published closer to the festival. Check the official FIFFP channels before travel planning, and book accommodation early if confirmed. +++ Perast String Festival — August 2026 (dates TBC): The Perast String Festival usually brings classical concerts and masterclasses to churches and historic venues around the Bay of Kotor. Dates, artists and venues are announced closer to the season. This is an excellent option for visitors seeking cultural evenings after beach hours, with a calm atmosphere and strong acoustics in heritage locations. +++ International Klapa Festival (Perast) — summer 2026 (dates TBC): Klapa singing is a regional a cappella tradition of the Adriatic coast. Perast typically hosts performances outdoors in the historic centre, offering a distinctive cultural experience under the open sky. Confirm the exact 2026 schedule before publishing or planning, as dates may shift depending on organisers and weather. +++ Perseid Meteor Shower — peak night 12–13 August 2026: One of the best annual stargazing moments, with dark-sky conditions expected around the peak. For the Bay of Kotor, move away from strong waterfront lighting, face north-east, and give yourself at least 20–30 minutes for eyes to adjust. No telescope is needed; a warm layer and a quiet spot are the essentials.

Shooting the Rooster – A Unique Perast Tradition (May, 15. 2025)

27 May 2025

Every year on May 15th, the people of Perast commemorate their historic victory over the Ottomans in a rather unusual way: by shooting at a rooster. A real rooster is placed on a floating wooden plank, 300 meters from the shore. Only men who register for the competition are allowed to shoot, using rifles from the shore. The contest begins before sunset and can last for hours—sometimes even postponed to the next day if night falls before the target is hit. The event opens with members of the Boka Navy, followed by the men of Perast, and finally visiting guests—if the rooster hasn’t been hit already.

Decorating the Madj Tree

27 May 2025

Decorating the Madj tree is a centuries-old celebration. While many coastal towns along the Adriatic used to observe this tradition, in Montenegro today, only the town of Perast continues to celebrate it. The event takes place on May 1st. The "madj" is a specially decorated tree, traditionally adorned with small bottles of wine and koromani (hard, round bread). According to custom, the most recently married man in Perast is responsible for decorating the tree and placing it in the town’s main square, where it remains for 15 days.
